Denise James is an experienced journalist, multimedia content creator and teacher. Her journalism career began in Detroit, at the nation’s first Black owned television station. She spent 3 decades working at television stations in several cities, including Philadelphia. While working at 6abc/Action News, she became known for thorough, creative, inclusive coverage as well as engaging writing and storytelling that reflects marginalized people’s truths in empowering ways. Now she coaches industry professionals, and teaches at Temple University, challenging aspiring journalists to embrace the power and responsibility that makes up the job of journalist, storyteller and truth purveyor. Denise is a member of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Online News Association. She is a longtime mentor in the NABJ Student Multimedia Journalism bootcamp style program and a PhillyCAM board member.
